Mantras – a great way to reduce stress during this difficult time

What is happening in the world right now is heartbreakingly awful and there is a lot of fear and uncertainty around.

Before I closed my studio, I could feel it in the air. Everyone certainly looked lost to say the least and many of my students expressed how worried they felt of the unknown.

The continuous media coverage of course is not helping; it fills us again with fear and negativity but we are human beings at the end of the day and it is in our nature to keep watching.

This stressful energy is of course harmful to us both mentally and eventually physically – mind and body are one.

I decided in the week leading up to the studio closure that all my classes were to going to have that extra calmness to keep us all grounded. I asked my students to really retreat inwards at a time when it was so chaotic outside and in many of my classes we used mantras.

What is a mantra? It’s a word or a statement that you silently repeat to yourself – Example of one I love to use in class “I am that I am” I like to think of them as little words of reassurance.

Why do Mantras Work?

Mantras are healing tools for the mind so when you repeat a mantra, you shift your brain’s mental state and transform your sense of awareness. When you still the mind during mantra meditation, you open up space for the mantra to plant its seeds within your consciousness.

I Encourage you to find a quiet space, lie down on your back and place your hands on your tummy whilst slowing your breathing. Start to follow the rise and fall of the belly with the breath allow all the muscles in your body to relax, then silently repeat the mantras I will share with you for a few minutes or as long as you feel comfortable. Notice how when you change your inner monologue and provide some gentle reassurance for yourself things suddenly seem a lot brighter. I hope after this you feel calm, centred and at ease.

3 Mantras to repeat if you are feeling overwhelmed in this difficult time.

I am safe

I am well

I trust

Sending unconditional love,

Stay safe, stay well
